The Sidney Prize is a monthly award that recognizes investigative journalism that exposes social and economic injustices. The prize was established to honor Sidney Cox, an accomplished film, stage, and television actor best known for his roles in Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – in addition to being an educator, human rights and environmental activist and dedicated educator.
Friends of Sidney Cox have taken steps to commemorate his influence both inside and outside the classroom by raising funds in order to establish an annual undergraduate writing scholarship which most closely meets Sidney Cox’s high standards for originality and integrity. A Committee was recently formed for this purpose, which has already attracted generous support. Contributions should be sent directly to Professor Harry T. Schultz ’37 at 1 Occom Ridge Hanover; checks should be payable to Dartmouth College.
Edward Jones-Imhotep of York University History Department was recently recognized with the Sidney Edelstein Prize – one of the premier honors in technology history – from Society for the History of Technology. This honor recognizes authors based on dissertation-based articles published in English marketing and consumer journals. Jones-Imhotep was the first faculty member from Canada to receive this prestigious honour, awarded by SHOTECH.
Annie Zhang has won the 2023 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize with her story ‘Who Rattles the Night?’ published in Overland magazine. The Hillman Foundation honors journalists, writers and public figures who engage in investigative reporting or policy advocacy on behalf of society as a whole. The foundation is an active supporter of both the Sidney Prize, which honors journalists whose investigations expose economic and social injustice, as well as U.S. and Canadian Hillman prizes which recognize journalism of exceptional integrity and depth. The Hillman Foundation presents several major awards each year, such as the Sidney Hook Memorial Award to a Phi Beta Kappa member who has distinguished themselves in scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership for liberal arts education nationally. Their board of trustees features Workers United president emeritus Bruce Raynor as well as actor Danny Glover.
