The Sidney Prize and Other Awards

A sidney prize is awarded to journalists and public figures who pursue social justice and public service. Established in 1946, this organization has existed for more than six decades and currently awards several monetary prizes to journalists and public figures who advance this cause. From searching for peace to fighting discrimination based on race, religion, nationality or gender discrimination; its board of directors includes prominent leftist labor leader Danny Glover as well as Workers United president Emeritus Bruce Raynor among its ranks.

Sydney Taylor Book Award recognizes outstanding books not only with prize money, but by awarding authors with gold or silver seals that can be placed on copies of their works by readers and librarians alike. In 2024, winners included Richard Ho and Lynn Scurfield’s Two New Years; Mari Lowe’s The Dubious Pranks of Shaindy Goodman; and Elana K Arnold’s The Blood Years as 2024 recipients.

Overland Magazine hosts the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize annually to recognize writers worldwide at any stage in their career. The winning short story will receive $5,000 AUD and will be published in Overland while two runners-up each win $750 AUD.

Roberts & Holland LLP and Harvard Law School’s Project on Private International Law have joined forces to establish the William H. Bowman II Prize in Animal Law to recognize a student paper on an issue of contemporary relevance in animal law. Submissions may be submitted either within an academic course, seminar, clinic, graduate degree program, or independently under faculty supervision as an independent study project.

Since 1987, the Hillman Foundation has presented an annual monetary prize in his name to journalists whose journalism illuminates “the great issues of our time–from seeking an equitable basis for lasting peace to fighting discrimination based on race, religion and nationality”. Furthermore, they have provided support for various social service projects over this time.

The Sidney Hillman Foundation was founded in 1946 to commemorate the late president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union – predecessor of Unite Here and Workers United/SEIU. As a left-leaning organization, it annually awards journalism and public service prizes worth hundreds of dollars; its board of trustees includes left-leaning labor leaders (such as former leaders from Amalgamated Clothing Workers of American that have faced controversy regarding union structure) as well as leadership from both Workers United (emeritus President Emeritus President Emeritus President Emeritus President Emeritus/SEIU). Furthermore, scholarships/ grants may also be made available directly.
