The Hong Kong Prize recognizes those individuals or organisations who have made significant contributions towards fostering and maintaining free societies in Hong Kong. Considered among the most prestigious awards available here, its recipient receives both an engraved gold medal and cash prize at an IPHS biennial conference open both to scholars as well as publishers.
South China Morning Post earned 12 prizes at this year’s Hong Kong News Awards 2024, including top honours in the Best Scoop category for reporters Sammy Heung, Edith Lin and Jeffie Lam for their expose of unauthorised structures added to luxury properties. Editor-in-chief Tammy Tam applauded them as being “the pride of our city”.
Ten Years was awarded top honours at the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards, receiving nine nominations and winning six awards, including Best Director Tsang Kin-wai won. Nominated for both a Golden Globe Award and Toronto International Film Festival screenings and receiving considerable critical acclaim, several critics have even described it as an all-out masterpiece.
Shu Qi, Zhang Yimou and Wang Xiaoshuai of The Grandmaster were honored with Most Popular Film categories wins; Wu Yin’s The Red Cliff also landed him a prize, along with Hong Kong-Chinese coproduction The Wife winning Best Actress honors and Song Seung Heon from A Tale of Two Sisters being given Best Supporting Actor honors.
Prizes are presented across disciplines, such as physics, mathematics, medicine, history and philosophy – to name just a few. Furthermore, the IPHS presents three book prizes at its biennial conference to recognize outstanding books in Hong Kong studies.
