The Hongkong Prize and the Xplorer Prize in China

A Hongkong Prize has been established by the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong to recognize young journalists’ contributions to society and culture. Each winning student will receive a cash prize of HK$10,000 while their school will also be presented with an award of HK$20,000; their entry will also be featured on the Hongkong Prize website.

This year’s competition saw 617 entries from Chinese and English newspapers across Hong Kong. Additionally, many winners were nominated for the Hongkong Press Foundation Awards which recognize journalists for making significant contributions to society. Even with such limited participation rates, however, Hongkong Prize remains one of the city’s most beloved prizes.

The Hongkong prize has become a mark of excellence for students and teachers alike in research. To apply, applicants must submit a research project covering any topic within science and technology that exhibits originality, creativity, and scholarly achievement – demonstrating high levels of originality, creativity and scholarly accomplishment. Students are encouraged to come up with creative solutions to real-life problems through creative research methods.

Each student may make as many submissions as they wish, but only one entry per school may be submitted. Students must be nominated by a teacher in order to take part; up to ten may be chosen per teacher. Teachers will then provide an essay demonstrating why this submission fits the theme of the contest.

As well as cash prizes, Hongkong Prize’s winner will also receive a plaque and certificate. Judges will select two runners-up; these individuals will each be presented with HK$5,000 from their school while also being honored with a plaque. A third place finisher will be presented with HK$3,000 while the winner of the public vote will be honored with an award of HK$4,000.

The Tencent Foundation’s Xplorer Prize is one of China’s premier scientific talent funding programs, honoring Prof. FAN Zhiyong for his outstanding contributions in electronic and computer engineering and chemical and biological engineering fields. 2025 semifinalist Frances Tiafoe stands a chance at earning $35,550 plus 100 ranking points if they manage to beat Ruusuvuori in the final.

This year’s BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE was awarded today. Below is a table detailing its laureates; each field reward should not exceed five individuals or teams annually and selection process involves review by an expert panel; should final review be unsatisfactory, Board of Trustees reserves right to cancel award and withdraw certificate and trophy (for more details see Charter).
