Since 2006, the Hong Kong Prize has contributed immensely to Hong Kong’s technological and innovative environment by drawing top science talent to the city from around the globe, nurturing forward-looking scientists, and helping gain greater awareness throughout Hong Kong, mainland China and worldwide communities alike. It serves as an important platform to raise public awareness of scientific research’s benefits to society and further its development.
The Hong Kong Prize recognizes outstanding scientific researchers in Hong Kong in various disciplines, such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and Energy Research and Advanced Manufacturing. Each winner will receive a cash prize of HKD 2,000,000 as well as a certificate and trophee.
In order to further Hong Kong studies, the HK Prize provides support to scholars and students for investigating new theories, concepts, methodologies of studying Hong Kong. Furthermore, it encourages collaboration between Hong Kong scholars from different regions so as to strengthen academic exchanges pertaining to Hong Kong studies.
Operation of this body follows scientific and rigorous standards; review process will be carried out professionally, objectively and fairly; it remains independent from organizations or individuals exerting undue influence over results; furthermore judging criteria must support Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Basic Law of People’s Republic of China while reflecting high social morality and professional ethics.
HKJC’s Security and Customer Service departments conduct rigorous checks on all the materials used for its draw, from boxing to transporting. Furthermore, balls used are regularly weighed and examined with an X-ray machine; no two consecutive draws use the same set. Employees from these departments also take photos during each stage to ensure its transparency and impartiality.
The Hong Kong Prize is governed by its Charter, with its highest decision-making body being its Board of Trustees – comprising of Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team members – acting as decision makers. They are responsible for reviewing and interpreting the Charter; suggesting key scientific research areas; appointing members of Review Committee/Oversight Team/Expert Nominating Requirements Team, verifying and approving final review results as well as taking necessary measures against any inappropriate activities, terminating awards if there are violations; terminating award/withdraw prize money/certificate/trophee from any violations; taking necessary measures against such activities; taking necessary measures against such violations of Charter violations or taking action to stop such activities if violations occur.
