Singapore Literature Prize 2022 Winners Announced

At the 2022 Singapore Literature Prize, 43 writers representing Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English competed across 12 categories for this biennial prize. Tonight (August 25), winners were revealed during an event held as part of Inside World Art Fair X – winners were chosen from each category and an overall Singapore Literature Prize winner was selected based on these six winners from each.

The prize was created in honour of Christopher Bathurst KC, Viscount Bledisloe of Tweeddale. A notable member of London’s commercial Bar who established an impressive practice throughout Southeast Asia including Singapore; as well as being part of Fountain Court Chambers.

At this week’s Toto draw, there’s still hope of reaching the $10 million jackpot – especially after three draws without a Group 1 winner in which prize pools increased from $1.2 million to over $5.8 million according to Singapore Pools.

Since 2011, when this prize pool was introduced, its prize has only increased by $1 Million once since. This boost comes following an influx of high-profile golfers such as Darren Clarke and Jon Rahm to participate.

Though this change may be good news for fans of the game, it could have an adverse impact on smaller businesses that rely heavily on offering higher prizes. Arcade operators must stop offering cash, money equivalents, credit and merchant vouchers as prizes beginning March 1 in order to reduce gambling inducement and prevent gambling addiction.

CNA interviewed many patrons at popular locations like Paco Funworld in Bugis+ and Cow Play Cow Moo in Downtown East, who seemed unconcerned about this change. One 35-year-old woman asked not to be identified told the news agency she frequented an arcade around once every month for small prizes like trading cards.

Ms Chia, another patron, noted that she typically only spends 30 to an hour playing at arcades and usually opts for bigger prizes if they are suitable for children such as school bags or plush toys. While aware of MHA’s announcement in February, she was unaffected by its changes; “I just enjoy playing; whatever prizes come my way are all part of the fun experience!” she concluded.
