Hk Prize – Honouring the Unsung Heroes

Hk Prize provides the ideal platform to recognize some of the world’s unsung heroes. Though they may go unrecognized, these individuals play an invaluable role in furthering world civilisation and shaping a peaceful society. From selfless caregivers to survivors who defy all odds, these people inspire us all to believe in ourselves and continue striving hard. In recognition of these heroes’ contributions and provide them with recognition and opportunities needed to pursue their goals, Hk Prize honors these incredible individuals with its annual award.

This year’s laureates include Ng Siew Chien for developing noninvasive tests for early diagnosis and timely intervention of gastrointestinal tract disorders and autism spectrum disorders; Wang Cong and Zhang Hua, for their breakthroughs in phase engineering of nanomaterials and 3D micro- and nanofabrication respectively; Chai Yang has created disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors to allow information processing directly within them; while The Hong Kong Prize honors young Fellows of the Academy who have made significant contributions to clinical research.

The Hong Kong Prize was founded in 2007 to commemorate George B. Endacott, who spearheaded the reestablishment of the History Department in 1946. Awarded annually, this prize rewards postgraduate students who excel in history research. An invaluable tool in furthering Hong Kong history scholarship.

At the awards ceremony, Dr Lee Lee, the Deputy director of the Prize, highlighted that Hong Kong Prize is one of the key ways for universities to recognise exceptional scientific research that has significant societal benefits. Lee also paid his respects to Run Run Shaw and paid tribute to him by reminding everyone present of how his legacy inspires young people in Hong Kong to see promise and possibilities within science. Finally he reiterated the government’s pledge of making Hong Kong into an innovation and technology hub and an international center of postsecondary education.

Winners will not only be given a monetary prize but will also have the chance to present their work at an international conference and gain worldwide exposure, which will help advance their careers and be leaders of tomorrow.

The Hong Kong Prize is organized by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation (HKAIT). Its Board consists of a Review Committee, Compliance Oversight Team and Secretariat; these members work together in reviewing and interpreting articles of its Charter; suggesting important scientific research fields for THE PRIZE; appointing members to both bodies; setting requirements on nominating experts; verifying and approving final review results and making decisions regarding award. As it’s non-profit organisation it does not accept donations of any sort – its operating costs are funded solely by bets placed on THE PRIZE!
