The Basics of Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack is a game of both skill and chance, but with proper strategy the house edge can be minimized significantly. The aim is to collect cards that add up to 21 or as close to it without going over. Played using one or more decks of 52 cards with each card assigned its own value according to its position in the deck and rules of the game; players receive two cards from which they may choose either “Stand” (hold their hand) or request additional ones (“Hit”).

The basic blackjack strategy chart focuses on the player’s card value, the dealer’s face-up card, and whether it is advantageous for them to hit, stand, split, or surrender when allowed. Based on simple mathematical calculations, this strategy chart will work in most games of blackjack; however it should only be applied in single deck games without side bets such as insurance which alters true odds and may reduce your chances of victory.

To play blackjack, all that’s required is five chips, a playing table and deck of cards – or virtual tables in most online casinos if preferred. In many instances, bet sizes can be chosen before beginning each hand; then software automatically places your chips into betting circles. It is important to exercise responsible gambling by setting a budget before beginning each session; should your losses exceed this limit or set limit, walk away and return later.

Blackjack allows for several side bets, although you should do your best to stay away from them as much as possible. Side bets tend to have higher risks and house edges compared to standard wagers – the two most frequently seen are Perfect Pairs and 21+3. Typically speaking, these bets decrease your overall chance of winning a hand and should therefore be avoided whenever possible.

If your hand is closer to 21 than that of the dealer’s, you win and will receive an amount equal to your original wager. If it falls lower, however, then your bet will be taken off. Ties do not count as losses and will simply be returned by the dealer.

Make the most out of your blackjack experience by learning its terms and rules. Below is a list of some of the more commonly used terms when it comes to blackjack; newcomers to the game will find this invaluable for understanding how it works and which strategies work best.
